Why Slytherins Aren't Evil.

This is a blog post that I've been meaning to write for a while but never really got round to.

Every Harry Potter fan sorts themselves into the Hogwarts house where they think they belong, for those muggles in my audience the four houses are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. However I never really knew which house the sorting hat would put me in though I was pretty sure I wasn't a Ravenclaw. So I was naturally very excited when I finally got access to Pottermore last year and was sorted.

I got put in Slytherin which at first I was a bit disappointed about but I have learnt to embrace being a Slytherin and be proud of the house which actually on consideration I do suit rather well.

Slytherin does have a reputation for being the house where evil people go with good reason; I mean when Voldemort and most of his deatheaters come from one single house it is really going to gain that reputation. But here I tell you why Slytherins in general aren't evil but why undeniably Slytherin house has a far higher than average 'evil' person count.

The qualities that Slytherins value are intelligence, ambition, determination, cunning, resourcefulness and leadership. Now where in this list do you see the word evil? You don't. Evil is not a prerequisite of becoming a Slytherin. There are numerous Slytherin's who are the Order of the Phoenix's side when it comes to fighting Voldemort; Horace Slughorn, Andromeda Tonks, Severus Snape even characters like Draco Malfoy, Narcissa Malfoy and Regulas Black did the right thing eventually. Though I will give you that a lot of these people aren't very nice. There will also be hundreds of unnamed characters that are good, loving and amazing people who are also Slytherins.

So why don't we see them? You must remember that the books are written from Harry's point of view and so we only see Harry's way of viewing Hogwarts and the people from Slytherin that come most to Harry's attention are those that seek to cause trouble and there is also a lot of prejudice out there that warps Harry's view on Slytherin from the very start, "there's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin" Hagrid tells Harry shortly after first introducing Harry to the wizarding world. Is it really any surprise we have a warped view of Slytherin house?

However it is true that Slytherin has produced more than its fair share of evil people. I mean most of the deatheaters were from Slytherin. I believe this is to do with the traits that Slytherin values are traits found in most evil people. These traits mean that Slytherins aren't afraid to say what they think or be judged by other people and can lead to people believing that they are better than everybody else. This means that those who aren't very nice are more noticeable and I think that there is less pressure to represent your house in the way it wants representing; good , clever and kind as qualities that come to mind when thinking of the other houses.

So whatever you may think. I'm proud to be a Slytherin and proud that I exhibit the Slytherin qualities.

12 of 12 March 2013

So I've been a bit rubbish with this blog (again) - usual reasons. Also my 12th of February was so boring that it didn't merit a post, which considering how boring the 12th of March was is saying something! So here goes:

Waking up to a lovely sunny morning after a nice lie in.

Need to take the gas readings for this quarter. Involves dragging a chair into the hall and standing on it on tiptoes.

My work setup for today.

Mid-afternoon snack break - Garibaldi is a good substitute for chocolate (sort-of).

Email Storm: Part 2

Getting ready for the SSAGO AGM.

My cycling into college get up.

A bit of French revision after I get home.

Chilling in front of the TV in the evening.

Microwave cake before it goes into the microwave (with egg substitute).

Cake after it comes out of the microwave (egg substitute didn't really work, it was a bit solid but still tasted nice.)

Watching new updates from my favourite Vloggers before bed.
