50 Book Challenge: 3rd Ten

The Long War: Terry Pratchett & Steven Baxter
432 Pages
The sequel to the Long Earth, a series where humans can move between parallel universes as easily as walking to the shops. I was a bit disappointed with the sequel. I thought that the story didn't really go anywhere. There were some quite interesting ideas but it felt like a series of unconnected events that never really built to anything. The finale as very sudden and didn't make much sense.

The Space Machine: Christopher Priest
363 Pages

A traditional sci-fi involving time travel and humans getting stuck on mars. I don't really have many opinions on it. It was quite generic and an enjoyable read I guess but nothing particularly memorable.

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight: Jennifer E. Smith
304 Pages
A heart warming teenage romance story. All the elements that you would expect and fairly predictable but enjoyable none the less.

Carpe Jugulum: Terry Pratchett
192 Pages
Hilarious. As per usual. A ridiculous comedy involving vampires and witches and surreal parody. An excellent discworld book!

The Diary of a Young Girl: Anne Frank
283 Pages

Another classic that I probably should have read as a kid but didn't and well you all know.

A Great and Terrible Beauty: Libba Bray
403 Pages
A really innovative fantasy; intricate plot-lines that kept you guessing. There was also a certain predictability that just made it even more heart breaking when it finally came. A personal favourite of the books that I've read recently.

The Lathe of Heaven: Ursula Le Quin
176 Pages
A book that on the surface appears to be a simple sci-fi story but actually makes you think about the morals of trying to change the world.

13 Little Blue Envelopes: Maureen Johnson
322 Pages
A didn't really feel this book. I understand that it's a great story and a really smart idea for a book. However you could definitely tell that it was written for young teenagers and then I never really felt able to connect with the story. There was just something about the characters which made them feel one dimensional and not quite real.

Severed Heads Broken Hearts: Robyn Schneider
330 Pages
I loved this book. Again another "coming of age story" but one that was beautifully constructed and really made you love the characters, understand their decisions and personally feel the book.

The Unnatural Inquirer: Simon R. Green
246 Pages
The 8th book in the Nightside series. A fun set of books about a hidden London where anything is possible and  detective's personal journey to discover who he is with his crazy friends and hidden private eye. I love this series even though it's not hugely well written but it is really good fun!
